Q&A with Laura Burlton
Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at 11:47AM The Burlton Ten has been a big success, so we figured our fearless followers might like to learn a little more about Laura and her series.
Favorite fairy tale?
Probably Little Red Riding Hood. I also love Alice in Wonderland, but strictly speaking, I guess that is not a fairy tale.
Best part of creating "Dreams in Chalk"?
Working with my daughter and making her into all of these characters! I also love researching ideas for the series. Reading and learning about new things, and just creating in general.
Digital or analog?
For this project, Analog. I shoot it all with a Holga using Ilford film.
Why you are a photographer?
Hmmm... Well, I have been interested in it from as long as I can remember, and my father was into photography when I was a kid. However, when I really got into it as an art form was about 12 or so years ago. I was getting back into painting and drawing, but my daughter kept getting into my supplies and adding her own touches. This grew a bit tiresome, so I switched to photography. One day I may go back to painting, but for now, this will do. Plus, I do get to draw for this series as well!
Favorite camera to shoot with?
My Holga, but I also love my Canon 5D mk2.
If you weren't making art, what would you be doing?
I would probably be a hairdresser.
Motto?
If at first you don't succeed, keep trying.
Who or what inspires you?
My kids. Fairy tales. Movies. Books. Life.
Any new projects you want to tell us about?
At the moment I am working on expanding the series. I have started using different models as well. This may develop into another series in time.
